Background

Sori Yanagi, Born In Tokyo, Japan In 1915, Was The Son Of Soetsu Yanagi Who Promoted 'Mingei (Japanese Folk Art)' Which Appreciated The Beauty In Everyday Objects Crafted By Hand. This Promotion In Turn Led To The Establishment Of The Nihon Mingeikan, The Folk Crafts Museum Of Japan.

Sori Went To Tokyo Art School In 1934 And Studied Both Art And Architecture. He Was Inspired By Le Corbusier And Charlotte Perriand Who Worked In Japan In The Early 1940S And Thus Began To Take More Interest In Design And Objects Rather Than Paintings And Buildings.

Following World War Ii, Sori Yanagi Designed Several Products Such As Furniture, Three-Wheeled Vehicles, Olympic Cauldron And Pedestrian Overpass. One Of His Most Iconic Designs Was The Water Kettle In 1954, Which Includes The Butterfly Chair And Porcelain And Silverware Series.

In 1955, Nihon Yoshokki Co Ltd Was Established In Tsubame City, Niigata Prefecture, Japan, Which Is A Center For Manufacturing Cutlery And Steel. This Company Manufactures Many Of The
