This Spoon From Sori Yanagi Is A Classic Example Of The Japanese Folk Art Known As Mingei. Expertly Crafted From 18-8 Stainless Steel, The Spoon Measures Approximately 140Mm In Length And Weighs 20G. It Is Produced By Nihon Yoshokki Co Ltd In Tsubame City, Niigata Prefecture, Japan.

Background

Sori Yanagi (1915-2011) Was A Japanese Artist And Designer. He Was The Son Of Soetsu Yanagi, Who Started The Movement Of “Mingei (Japanese Folk Art)”, Which Valued Hand-Crafted Art Of Ordinary People And Discovered Beauty In Everyday Ordinary Objects. He Was Also The Founder Of The Nihon Mingeikan, The Folk Crafts Museum Of Japan. Sori Yanagi Studied Art And Architecture At Tokyo Art School In 1934. He Was Influenced By The Works Of Le Corbusier And Charlotte Perriand, And Became More Interested In “Design And Objects” Rather Than Paintings And Buildings. After World War Ii, Sori Yanagi Designed Many Kinds Of Products Such As Furniture, Three-Wheeled Vehicle, Olympic Cauldron, And Pedestrian Overpass. He Gained International Fame With His Designs Including The Butterfly Chair In 1954, As Well As His Porcelain And Silverware Series. His Products Are Now Manufactured By Nihon Yoshokki Co Ltd In Tsubame City, Niigata Prefecture, Japan.
