The Ohitsu is a traditional Japanese wooden container with a lid, designed to keep steamed rice from rice cookers in its best condition. It is made from Sawara wood, native to the Kiso region, which is renowned for its use in traditional Japanese kitchen tools such as hangiri and ohitsu. The distinctive masame (straight-grain) pattern and copper ornamentation of Sawara wood give this container a refined and sophisticated appearance.

Thanks to its natural resin content, Sawara wood offers greater water resistance and durability compared to other types of wood. These qualities also provide natural antibacterial effects, making it a safe and practical material for kitchen use. The Ohitsu is available in two types: Edobitsu and Nosebitsu. The only difference between the two lies in the shape of the lid.

Use & Care
Sawara wood may occasionally release a small amount of resin on the surface — a natural and harmless occurrence, though it can feel sticky and leave yellowish stains. To remove the stickiness, wipe the surface with vinegar or ethanol (sterilizing alcohol). While some yellow stains may remain, the product remains perfectly safe to use.

After each use, wash the container with hot water to remove any food residue that could cause black stains. Thoroughly drain, dry, and wipe it with a clean, dry cloth. Store the Ohitsu in a cool, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight. If moisture remains before drying, the wood may shrink, leading to cracks or loosened copper ornamentation. Leaving it damp for too long can also cause mold or black stains. The Ohitsu should not be washed in a dishwasher.
