柳宗理は1915年に東京で生まれました。父は、一般の人々の手作りの芸術を評価する「民芸（日本の民芸）」の主要な提唱者であった柳宗悦です。宗理は1934年に東京美術学校に入学し、ル・コルビュジエとシャルロット・ペリアンに触発され、絵画や建物よりもデザインやオブジェクトに焦点を当てるようになりました。 第二次世界大戦後、宗理は家具、三輪車、オリンピック聖火台、歩道橋など、多くの高品質な製品を設計しました。彼の最も有名なデザインは、1954年のバタフライチェアであり、彼の磁器と銀器のシリーズも同様です。柳宗理スプーンは、刃物と鉄鋼製造の中心地である新潟県燕市の日本洋食器株式会社によって製造されました。
