Background
柳宗理は1915年に東京で生まれました。彼の父である柳宗悦は、「民芸（日本の民芸）」の推進における重要な人物であり、普通の人々の手作りの芸術を評価し、日常のオブジェクトに美しさを見出しました。その結果、彼は日本民藝館の設立を支援しました。
柳宗理は1934年に東京美術学校で美術と建築の両方を学び、1940年代初頭に日本を訪れたル・コルビュジエとシャルロット・ペリアンに特に感銘を受けました。これにより、彼は絵画や建物ではなく、デザインやオブジェクトに興味を持つようになりました。
第二次世界大戦後、柳宗理は家具、三輪車、オリンピック聖火台、歩道橋など、多くの製品を設計しました。彼は1954年のバタフライチェア、そして彼の磁器と銀器シリーズで最もよく知られています。
日本洋食器株式会社は、カトラリーと鉄鋼製造の中心地である新潟県燕市で1955年に設立されました。柳宗理デザインのキッチン用品と食器のほとんどを製造しています。
