背景
柳宗理は1915年に日本の東京で生まれました。彼は民藝（日本の民芸）の普及に尽力した柳宗悦の息子であり、民藝は普通の人々の手作りの芸術を尊重し、日常の物の中に美を発見しました。その後、宗悦は日本民藝館を設立しました。
柳宗理は1934年に東京美術学校に入学し、芸術と建築の両方を学びました。彼は特にデザインとオブジェクトに興味を持つようになり、1940年代初頭に日本で活動したル・コルビュジエとシャルロット・ペリアンからインスピレーションを受けました。第二次世界大戦後、宗理は家具、三輪車、オリンピックの聖火台、歩道橋など、さまざまな種類の製品を設計しました。彼の最も有名なデザインには、1954年のバタフライチェアなどがあります。
