背景
柳宗理は1915年、東京に生まれました。父は柳宗悦。宗悦は民藝（日本の民俗芸術）の推進者であり、日常の手工芸品の美しさを強調しました。彼はまた、日本民藝館の設立にも貢献しました。
1934年、宗理は東京美術学校で美術と建築を学び始めました。ここで彼はデザインとオブジェクトへの関心を深め、ル・コルビュジエとシャルロット・ペリアンの作品に触発されました。第二次世界大戦後、宗理は家具、オリンピック聖火台、歩道橋など、多くの製品を設計しましたが、彼の最も有名なデザインは1954年のバタフライチェアと彼の磁器と銀器のシリーズです。
ニホンヨシッキ株式会社は、1955年に新潟県燕市で創業し、柳宗理のキッチン用品や食器のほとんどを製造しています。ここは、刃物と鉄鋼製造の中心地です。
