柳宗理は1915年に東京で生まれ、父である柳宗悦の民藝（日本の民俗芸術）を推進する活動に大きな影響を受けました。柳は東京美術学校で美術と建築を学び、1940年代にシャルロット・ペリアンが日本で活動した際、ル・コルビュジエと彼女からさらに刺激を受けました。第二次世界大戦後、柳は多くの製品をデザインし、彼のウォーターケトル、バタフライチェア、陶磁器と銀器シリーズは彼の最も有名なデザインの一部です。ここで紹介するスプーンは、新潟県燕市のニホンヨシキ株式会社で製造されています。
