背景
著名な日本人デザイナーの柳宗理は1915年に東京で生まれました。彼の父は柳宗悦で、民藝（日本の民俗芸術）の推進に尽力し、普通の人々による手作りの芸術を高く評価し、日常のオブジェクトに美しさを見出しました。彼の助けにより、日本民藝館が設立されました。
1934年、柳宗理は東京美術学校に入学し、美術と建築の両方を学びました。1940年代初頭に日本で働いていたル・コルビュジエとシャルロット・ペリアンへの憧れから、絵画や建物ではなく、デザインやオブジェクトに焦点を当てるようになりました。第二次世界大戦後、柳宗理は家具、三輪車、オリンピックの大釜、歩道橋など、多くの製品を設計しました。彼は、湯沸かし器のデザインと1954年のバタフライチェア、そして彼の磁器と銀器のシリーズで有名です。
ニホンヨシキ株式会社は、カトラリーと鉄鋼製造の中心地である新潟県燕市で1955年に設立されました。この会社は、柳宗理のキッチン用品と食器シリーズの製造を担当しています。
