背景
1915年に日本の東京で生まれた柳宗理は、手作りの日用品の美しさを評価した「民芸（日本の民芸）」を推進した柳宗悦の息子でした。この推進は、日本の民芸館の設立につながりました。
宗理は1934年に東京美術学校に進学し、美術と建築の両方を学びました。彼は、1940年代初頭に日本で働いていたル・コルビュジエとシャルロット・ペリアンに触発され、絵画や建物よりもデザインやオブジェクトに興味を持つようになりました。
第二次世界大戦後、柳宗理は家具、三輪車、オリンピック聖火台、歩道橋など、いくつかの製品を設計しました。彼の最も象徴的なデザインの1つは1954年のウォーターケトルで、バタフライチェア、磁器、銀器シリーズが含まれています。
