柳宗理は1915年に日本の東京で生まれました。彼の父である柳宗悦は、日本の民藝運動の著名な人物であり、日本民藝館の設立に貢献しました。
宗理は1934年に東京美術学校で美術と建築を学び、ル・コルビュジエとシャルロット・ペリアンの作品に触発されました。第二次世界大戦後、宗理は家具、三輪車、オリンピック聖火台、歩道橋など、多くの製品を設計しました。彼はまた、1954年に象徴的なバタフライチェア、そして彼の磁器と銀器シリーズを設計しました。
