背景
1915年東京生まれの柳宗理は、父である柳宗悦の民芸（日本の民俗芸術）の推進に影響を受けました。1934年、宗理は東京美術学校に入学し、美術と建築の両方を学びました。ル・コルビュジエとシャルロット・ペリアンの日本での仕事に触発され、デザインとオブジェクトに焦点を移しました。第二次世界大戦後、宗理は家具、三輪車、オリンピック聖火台、歩道橋など、さまざまなアイテムをデザインしました。彼の最も有名なデザインは、1954年のバタフライチェアや陶磁器と銀器のシリーズを含む、ウォーターケトルです。株式会社ニホンヨシキは、新潟県燕市で柳宗理の台所用品と食器のほとんどを製造しています。
