背景
柳宗理は1915年に日本の東京で生まれました。彼の父、柳宗悦は民藝（日本の民俗芸術）の推進者であり、普通の人々の手作りの芸術を評価し、日常のオブジェクトに美を発見しました。宗悦の作品は、日本民藝館の設立に貢献しました。
柳は1934年に東京美術学校で美術と建築を学び、1940年代初頭に日本で活動していたル・コルビュジエとシャルロット・ペリアンに触発されました。これにより、彼は絵画や建物よりもデザインやオブジェクトに焦点を当てるようになりました。
第二次世界大戦後、柳は家具、三輪車、オリンピックの聖火台、歩道橋、湯沸かし器など、多くの製品を設計しました。彼はまた、1954年にバタフライチェアと陶磁器と銀器のシリーズを作成しました。
