背景
柳宗理は1915年に日本の東京で生まれ、民藝（日本の民芸）の主要な推進者であった父、柳宗悦から大きな影響を受けました。宗理は1934年に東京美術学校で美術と建築を学びました。彼は絵画や建物よりもデザインや物に興味があり、それはシャーロット・ペリアンとの経験によってさらに形成されました。
第二次世界大戦後、宗理は家具から大釜まで幅広い製品をデザインし、その中には彼の最も有名なデザインである1954年のバタフライチェアも含まれています。彼のデザインの製造は、1955年に日本の新潟県燕市で設立されたニホンヨシキ株式会社によって行われました。
