伝説的な日本のデザイナー、柳宗理は1915年に東京で生まれました。彼の父、柳宗悦は民芸（日本の民俗芸術）の主要な提唱者であり、日本民藝館の設立に貢献しました。柳は1934年に東京美術学校に入学し、ル・コルビュジエとシャルロット・ペリアンの作品に触発され、デザインとオブジェクトへの関心を刺激しました。
第二次世界大戦後、柳宗理は家具、三輪車、オリンピック聖火台、歩道橋など、さまざまな製品を設計しました。彼の最も有名なデザインには、1954年のバタフライチェアや、磁器と銀器のシリーズがあります。彼の作品は現在、カトラリーと鉄鋼生産の中心地である新潟県燕市にあるニホンヨシキ株式会社によって製造されています。
