背景
柳宗理は、1915年に東京で生まれた著名な日本人デザイナーです。彼の父である柳宗悦は、民藝（日本の民俗芸術）の推進者であり、普通の人々の手作りの芸術を尊重し、日常のありふれた物の中に美を発見しました。1934年、宗理は東京美術学校に入学し、美術と建築を学びました。その後、ル・コルビュジエとシャルロット・ペリアンに触発され、デザインとオブジェクトに重点を置くようになりました。第二次世界大戦後、宗理は家具、三輪車、オリンピックの聖火台、歩道橋、湯沸かし器など、複数の製品を設計しました。後者は彼の最も有名なデザインの1つであり、1954年のバタフライチェアや磁器と銀器のシリーズも含まれています。新潟県燕市に拠点を置くニホンヨシッキ株式会社は、柳宗理のキッチン用品や食器のほとんどを製造しています。
