柳宗理は1915年に日本の東京で生まれました。彼の父、柳宗悦は民藝（日本の民俗芸術）の推進者であり、普通の人々の手作りの芸術を尊重し、日常の普通の物の中に美を発見しました。彼はまた、日本民藝館の設立にも尽力しました。
宗理は1934年に東京美術学校で美術と建築を学びました。彼は1940年代初頭のル・コルビュジエとシャルロット・ペリアンの日本での仕事に触発され、絵画や建築よりもデザインやオブジェクトに焦点を当てるようになりました。
宗理は第二次世界大戦後、家具、三輪車、オリンピック聖火台、歩道橋など、多くの製品を設計しました。彼の最も有名なデザインは1954年のウォーターケトルで、バタフライチェアや磁器と銀器のシリーズも含まれています。
