Background

Sori Yanagi Was Born In Tokyo, Japan In 1915 And Was Deeply Influenced By His Father, Soetsu Yanagi, Who Was A Major Promoter Of Mingei (Japanese Folk Art). Sori Studied Art And Architecture At Tokyo Art School In 1934. He Was More Interested In Design And Objects Than Paintings And Buildings, Which Was Further Shaped By His Experience With Charlotte Perriand.

Post-World War Ii, Sori Designed A Wide Variety Of Products From Furniture To Cauldrons, Including His Most Famous Design, The Butterfly Chair In 1954. Manufacturing Of His Designs Was Done By Nihon Yoshokki Co Ltd, Which Was Founded In 1955 In Tsubame City, Niigata Prefecture, Japan.
