Background

Sori Yanagi Was Born In Tokyo, Japan In 1915. His Father, Soetsu Yanagi, Was A Proponent Of Mingei (Japanese Folk Art), Which Valued Hand-Crafted Art Of Everyday Objects And Sought To Find Beauty In The Ordinary. Soetsu Was Also Instrumental In The Founding Of The Nihon Mingeikan, The Folk Crafts Museum Of Japan.

Sori Yanagi Studied Both Art And Architecture At Tokyo Art School In 1934 And Was Greatly Influenced By The Works Of Le Corbusier And Charlotte Perriand. He Developed An Interest In Design, Which Led To Him Creating A Variety Of Products Such As Furniture, A Three-Wheeled Vehicle, An Olympic Cauldron, And A Pedestrian Overpass.

In 1954, Sori Yanagi Designed The Iconic Butterfly Chair, As Well As A Series Of Porcelain And Silverware. In 1955, Nihon Yoshokki Co Ltd Was Founded In Tsubame City, Niigata Prefecture, Japan, Which Became The Center For The Manufacturing Of Cutlery And Steel. Most Of Sori Yanagi'S Kitchenware And Tableware Are Produced By This Company.
