Hair Conditioner

Using hair conditioner is the second step in the hair care routine, after the hair shampoo step. While shampoo is specially formulated to remove sweat and dead skin cells (dandruff) from the scalp, hair conditioner makes hair softer and easier to manage. At the same time, these products also have the ability to protect the hair.

Hair conditioner is a hair care product that is used after shampooing (after rinsing the hair conditioner out of the hair). Its main purpose is to close the hair cuticle, reduce friction between hairs to smooth and detangle hair, and reduce damage and split ends. The use of hair conditioner also provides the hair with the necessary moisture after cleansing with hair shampoo, softens the hair strands, restores the balance of moisture in the hair.

Some professional hair care brands offer hair conditioners to suit different hair types and conditions: thick hair, thin hair, frizzy hair, damaged hair, bleached hair, and more. This usually comes with hair shampoo into a pair.

The main ingredients in hair conditioner are humectants such as lipids, silicones, proteins, glycols, etc.

Quaternary cationic surfactants: due to their ability to carry a positive charge, opposite to that of hair, their ability to adsorb and store on hair is good, neutralizing the charge. The most commonly used surfactants are polyquaternium-47, polyquaternium-10 polyquaternium-22.

Humectants: these substances create a thin film covering the hair, retain moisture in the hair, make the scales on the cutin layer stack up, making the hair smoother, brighter, and reducing the roughness of the hair. It also reduces the electrical charge of the hair. The most commonly used humectants are PVP. However, humectants also have the disadvantage of making hair difficult to straighten and style.

Protein: is the component of hair fibers. Has the ability to penetrate into the gaps in the hair, improving the positions of cracks and breaks. Proteins need time for them to come into contact and penetrate deeply into the hair.

Silicon: has the ability to create a thin film on the hair fiber without causing oil on the hair. Some derivatives are water resistant and can be left in the hair after rinsing, such as cyclomethicone, dimethicone and amodimethicone.

Other ingredients: thickeners (salt, polymer), medicinal extracts (such as aloe, basil, locust...), vitamins, preservatives, aromatics, water...

Hair cuticle closure

A little knowledge of hair structure. Our hair is made up of 3 layers:

The medulla is the innermost layer.

The core layer (Cortex) in the middle makes up 90% of the hair's weight, contains the proteins that determine the hair shape and contains most of the pigment (melanin) that gives the hair color.

The cuticle is the outermost layer, which is the protective layer of your hair, and consists of transparent, overlapping cells like fish scales or roof tiles.

In healthy hair, the cuticle cells close and line up neatly, making your hair look smooth, shiny. The cuticle also helps protect the inner layers of hair from damage. It also minimizes the movement of moisture in and out of the hair core, thus maintaining the balance and flexibility of the hair.

When you wash your hair, the shampoo and water will open the cuticles, leaving your hair dehydrated and dry. As the hairs slide past each other, the open cuticle cells experience great friction and fall off, resulting in hair damage.

Hair conditioners are often acidic, which will help close the hair cuticle, reduce friction between the hair strands and protect the hair from damage. Closing the cuticle also helps the nutrients in shampoos, conditioners, and treatments stay in the hair longer.

Why hair conditioner with acidity can close the hair cuticle? Epidermal cells are held together by forces called hydrogen bonds, the more hydrogen there is, the stronger the hydrogen bonds. Meanwhile, acids contain a lot of hydrogen. So the hair cuticle closes better when the hair is acidic.

Add moisture to hair after using hair shampoo

The shampoo is specially formulated to remove sweat, dirt, dead skin cells and hair products. Shampoos often contain surfactants, which strip the hair of its natural oils and moisture. Therefore, after washing your hair, it is easy to see that your hair is dry, brittle, prone to tangles and easy to break.

Hair conditioners contain humectants, which are also found in skin care products, which draw water into the hair and trap it in the hair. This helps the moisture in the hair be balanced, the hair softer.

Create a protective layer of hair

Hair grows about 14cm a year, so if you have shoulder length hair, it is already several years old. That is thousands of days of brushing, washing, sun drying, drying, straightening and even dyeing and bleaching. The cuticle peels off the hair over time. As a result, you will easily feel the hair near your scalp feeling smooth and not breaking much, while the older hair at the ends is damaged and rough. And if these damaged hairs rub against each other, the situation gets worse.

The use of hair conditioner helps restructure the cuticle with a protective coating, allowing hair to continue to grow and not break easily. When hair is exposed to the outside world, the outer cuticle is damaged until it is eventually shed. Hair conditioner will fill in those damage and coat the hair to support the cuticle.
