Background

Sori Yanagi Is An Iconic Figure In Contemporary Japanese Design, Having Been Born In Tokyo, Japan In 1915. Sori'S Father, Soetsu Yanagi, Was A Major Proponent Of The Mingei (Japanese Folk Art) Movement Which Valued Hand-Crafted Art Of Ordinary People And Discovered Beauty In Everyday Objects. This Movement Was Responsible For The Establishment Of The Nihon Mingeikan, The Folk Crafts Museum Of Japan.

Sori Was Educated In Both Art And Architecture At The Tokyo Art School In 1934, And Was Highly Influenced By Renowned Architects Such As Le Corbusier And Charlotte Perriand Who Visited Japan In The 1940S. The Design And Production Of Everyday Objects Became A Large Focus In Sori'S Work, And After World War Ii He Designed Various Products Such As Furniture, Three-Wheeled Vehicles, Olympic Cauldrons And Pedestrian Overpasses.

The Design Of The Iconic Water Kettle In 1954 And The Butterfly Chair In 1954 Are Two Of Sori Yanagi'S Most Famous Works, And The Porcelain And Silverware Series Is Another Defining Feature Of His Art. The Production Of These Works Is Largely Undertaken By Nihon Yoshokki Co Ltd, A Company Founded In 1955 In Tsubame City, Niigata Prefecture, Japan, Which
