Background

Sori Yanagi Was Born In Tokyo, Japan In 1915. His Father Soetsu Yanagi Was A Key Figure In The Promotion Of Mingei (Japanese Folk Art), And Helped To Establish The Nihon Mingeikan, The Folk Crafts Museum Of Japan. Sori Was Inspired By Le Corbusier And Charlotte Perriand, And Upon Entering Tokyo Art School In 1934, He Became More Interested In Design And Objects Than Painting And Building.

After World War Ii, Sori Designed A Variety Of Products, Including Furniture, A Three-Wheeled Vehicle, An Olympic Cauldron And A Pedestrian Overpass. His Most Famous Designs Include The Butterfly Chair In 1954 And His Porcelain And Silverware Series. Nihon Yoshokki Co Ltd, Based In Tsubame City, Niigata Prefecture, Japan, Is The Manufacturer Of Most Of The Sori Yanagi-Designed Kitchenware And Tableware.
