Background

Sori Yanagi Was Born In Tokyo, Japan In 1915. His Father, Soetsu Yanagi, Was A Major Influence In His Life, As He Was A Pioneer In The Promotion Of Japanese Folk Art And Established The Nihon Mingeikan, The Folk Crafts Museum Of Japan.

After Studying Art And Architecture At Tokyo Art School In 1934, Sori Yanagi Was Drawn To Design And Objects, Rather Than Paintings And Buildings. He Was Inspired By Le Corbusier And Charlotte Perriand, And Went On To Create Many Iconic Designs, Such As The Butterfly Chair In 1954, Olympic Cauldron, And Pedestrian Overpass.

In 1955, Sori Yanagi Partnered With Nihon Yoshokki Co Ltd In Tsubame City, Niigata Prefecture, Japan To Produce His Kitchenware And Tableware Designs. The Collections Have Become Known For Their Timeless Elegance And Durability, And Have Even Been Awarded The Good Design Award In 1998.
