Background

Sori Yanagi Was Born In Tokyo, Japan In 1915 And Was The Son Of Soetsu Yanagi Who Was Responsible For The Promotion Of “Mingei (Japanese Folk Art)”. This Was An Appreciation For Handcrafted Art Of Ordinary People That Discovered Beauty In Everyday Objects. Soetsu Also Helped To Set Up The Nihon Mingeikan, Japan'S Folk Crafts Museum.

In 1934, Sori Yanagi Entered The Tokyo Art School. He Studied Both Art And Architecture And Was Heavily Influenced By Le Corbusier And Charlotte Perriand Who Worked In Japan In The Early 1940S. This Motivated Him To Focus More On “Design And Objects” Than On Paintings And Buildings.

After World War Ii, Sori Yanagi Designed Many Products Such As Furniture, Three-Wheeled Vehicles, Olympic Cauldrons, And Pedestrian Overpasses. His Most Famous Design Was The Water Kettle Which Also Included The Butterfly Chair In 1954, As Well As His Porcelain And Silverware Series.

The Sori Yanagi Bowls Are Crafted By Nihon Yoshokki Co Ltd, Which Was Founded In 1955 In Tsubame City, Niigata Prefecture, Japan. This City Is The Center Of Cutlery And Steel Manufacturing And Is Known For Its High-Quality Kitchenware And Tableware.
