Background

Sori Yanagi Was A Renowned Japanese Artist And Designer, Born In Tokyo In 1915. His Father Soetsu Yanagi Is Credited With Introducing "Mingei", A Japanese Folk Art Form, Which Values Handmade Crafts And Focuses On Discovering Beauty In Everyday Objects. Soetsu Also Helped To Establish The Nihon Mingeikan, The Folk Crafts Museum In Japan.

In 1934, Sori Joined The Tokyo Art School To Study Art And Architecture. He Was Highly Inspired By Le Corbusier And Charlotte Perriand, And Began To Focus On Design And Objects Rather Than Painting And Buildings. After World War Ii, Sori Designed A Number Of Products Such As Furniture, Three-Wheeled Vehicles, Olympic Cauldrons, And Pedestrian Overpasses. He Is Most Famous For His Butterfly Chair, Designed In 1954, And His Range Of Porcelain And Silverware Products.

Nihon Yoshokki Co Ltd, Founded In 1955 In Tsubame City, Niigata Prefecture, Japan, Is The Manufacturing Centre For Most Of Sori Yanagi'S Kitchenware And Tableware.
