Background

Sori Yanagi Was Born In Tokyo, Japan In 1915. His Father, Soetsu Yanagi Was A Major Influence In Promoting Mingei, Or Japanese Folk Art, Which Valued Everyday Handcrafted Art And Celebrated The Beauty Of Ordinary Objects. Soetsu Was Also A Founding Member Of The Nihon Mingeikan, The Folk Crafts Museum Of Japan.

Sori Studied Both Art And Architecture During His Time At Tokyo Art School And Was Inspired By Le Corbusier And Charlotte Perriand, Two Influential Figures In Design. Having Developed A Greater Interest In The Design Of Objects Rather Than Painting And Architecture, Sori Designed A Wide Range Of Products Such As Furniture, Three-Wheeled Vehicles, Olympic Cauldrons, And Pedestrian Overpasses.

His Most Famous Designs Include The Butterfly Chair Of 1954, As Well As His Porcelain And Silverware Series. These Designs Are Manufactured By Nihon Yoshokki Co Ltd, Which Was Founded In 1955 In Tsubame City, Niigata Prefecture, Japan, And Has Become The Center Of Cutlery And Steel Production.
